Just last week, Americans marked the passing of the birth of our nation (July 4th). It is typically the busiest vacation time of the summer months in the USA. However, in water cooler conversations at work, it appears that more Americans have cut back on vacation plans because of the high gasoline prices. Even a short trip an hour away from your home is a major expense at four dollars plus per gallon.

What to Do. At a time when not only gasoline prices are high – everything is high, it is imperative that you try to find ways to get out and have fun while not over-spending or running up huge credit card bills. Many areas of the country have local attractions that can be used as a place to have fun. A local lake, park or other public location is suitable.

The first thing to do is budget how much to spend for your vacation and stick to it. Most places that have a cost associated with them like theme parks, zoos, or other locations have discount coupons that you can use to decrease the cost. Look for your in-state promotions on your state`s website. Often times, these will have information or discount coupons that you can take advantage of right there. You can also find discounts at local supermarkets, and drug retailers.

Once you have your budget in place, make your vacation fit around it. This might mean doing short day-trips within a certain mileage from your home. The idea is to get away for awhile from the normal surroundings. These ideas can also be a nice substitute for having to pack up clothes and other items that you normally have to take on a vacation. Think about arriving back from a day-trip with nothing to unload from the car!

Where to Go. The local parks and zoos have already been mentioned. Also, there is camping if your family is so inclined. And, camping can be inexpensive as long as you do not have to purchase a new camper to make it happen. Tent camping is fun and much less expensive. Theme parks can provide a day worth of fun, as well. Although, without discounts, they can be pricey. Sports attractions can be a great get away. Major sports teams have very expensive ticket prices, but minor league teams offer just as much fun and a great place to spend with family as well.

Make the Most Of It. Make up your mind that no matter what, your family is going to have fun. That mindset will go far in making sure that this is one of the best vacations ever. Because the reality of it is that a vacation is the time for family to get away from it all and be together. The distance from home is not as important as the actual event.
